Diurnal Cycles of Near‐Surface Currents Across the Tropical Pacific

نویسندگان

چکیده

Solar radiative heat and wind-forced momentum can be trapped at the surface transmitted into ocean interior via a daily descending shear layer that mixes downwards. Here, we characterize extent of this mechanism across tropical Pacific seven mooring deployments spanning eastern western Inter-Tropical South Convergence Zones. We find wide range diurnal cycles in temperature velocity, from very weak upper 10 m to strong reach as deep 60 m. These deeper appear where background above equatorial undercurrent helps destabilize fluid, setting up persistent state marginal instability. At sites located these marginally unstable regions, linear relationship between wind speed depth strength cycle velocity.

Intense surface currents in the tropical Pacific during 1996–1998

Tropical Pacific Ocean near-surface currents and their momentum and temperature balances are investigated using several data sets, including drifting buoy velocities and TOPEX/Poseidon altimetry. The data sets are combined to produce monthly surface current estimates on a uniform grid for the 6-year period 1993–1998, using multivariate optimal interpolation. The analysis shows dramatic changes ...

Diurnal and Semidiurnal Variations of the Surface Wind Field over the Tropical Pacific Ocean

The climatological large-scale patterns of diurnal and semidiurnal near-surface wind variations over the tropical Pacific Ocean are documented using 3 yr of hourly measurements from the Tropical Atmosphere–Ocean moored buoy array. Semidiurnal variations account for 68% of the mean daily variance of the zonal wind component, while diurnal variations account for 82% of the mean daily variance of ...

A "New" Mechanism for the Diurnal Variation of Convection over the Tropical Western Pacific Ocean

In the companion abstract in this proceedings (Parsons and Yoneyama 1998), we discussed dry intrusions and their origins. It was found that these dry intrusions over the equatorial waters actually originated in the middle latitude westerly winds. The reader is referred to that paper for discussion of the origins and for further background information on these dry intrusion events. In this paper...

Diurnal variation and life-cycle of deep convective systems over the tropical pacific warm pool

Satellite infrared data and in situ surface measurements from the Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Response Experiment (TOGA C O M E ) are used to examine the diurnal variations of deep convection in two distinct large-scale flow regimes over the western Pacific warm pool. Large-scale atmospheric dynamic and radiative processes strongly affect the life-cycle of deep con...

a comparative pragmatic analysis of the speech act of “disagreement” across english and persian

the speech act of disagreement has been one of the speech acts that has received the least attention in the field of pragmatics. this study investigates the ways power relations, social distance, formality of the context, gender, and language proficiency (for efl learners) influence disagreement and politeness strategies. the participants of the study were 200 male and female native persian s...
